Clara Bostian's Sand Tart Real Gram Style

Clara Bostian's Sand Tart Real Gram Style.

My great grandmother who lived to be 89 years old .
She died in Sunbury in 1973 when I was 14 years old.
I loved this great grandma very much,
she was very kind to her great grandchildren and loved us all.
She often cooked meals and treats for us.
She kept all her recipes in a very old note book .
It was about 8 by 7 inches and it had a black card board cover with plain lined paper in it.
In this book she had hand written over the years all her favorite recipes.
I remember the recipe book being in very bad shape and it was coming apart.
Many pages were smudged with finger marks and flour dusting.
After she passed my grandfather owned the book.
And I copied a few child hood remembered recipes from it.
Those I looked forward to eating at special occasions.
She was known as a very good cook and baker.
She had a covered glass candy dish that she would fill with lovely sweet things.

You can use any shape of cookie cutter .

*(These notes are my own added ones to make it easier for any one wanting to take on the task.)

*(To make this more easy this recipe can be started 2 nights before baking the cookies.)

1st night before mixing up cookie dough.

* (Set 2 cups of real butter out the night before)

2 nd day the day of mixing

*First beat two eggs in a small bowl
*Take a second bowl and

cream the butter and sugar slowly.

1. 2 and 1 half cups of white sugar
2. 2 cups of real butter. * (Room temperature or soft )

Add flour to this butter and sugar mixture working it in well.

3. 4 cups of white flour

Add the well beaten eggs and mix well.

4. 2 eggs beaten well.

* Form into a ball and but in a buttered bowl and cover the top with plastic wrap.

Chill over night

*(Mix these first 4 ingredients up the day before baking and just the mixture in the refrigerator.)
-------------
Day of baking.
*(You need a clean large surface, a table top or counter top will do just fine.)
*( You need a rolling pin or a tall round sturdy drinking glass will do fine.)
*(lightly floured the surface of table or counter keep it floured with each piece you roll out )
*( Do not over work the dough be easy with it)
*(You need a bowl with beaten whites of egg)

Roll out dough *( a bit at a time) thin (*1/4 inch) on lightly floured board

Roll out thin on lightly floured board.

*(cut shapes with floured cookie cutter)

*( Arrange each shape on an ungreased cookie pan)

*(after arranging on cookie sheet)

Brush *( each raw cookie) lightly with beaten egg white.

*( For decoration and taste you can use the old fashion things)

Pecan meats. * ( 1 half shelled pecan nut pressed into the center of the raw cookie)

* ( table sugar to sprinkle on raw dough)

Mary Ellen BOSTIAN is my great aunt and she was born Dec 22, 1906 in Sunbury PA.
We always called her Mary Ellen, she never married and lived with her mother
Clara BOSTIAN.
On 731 1/2 South Fourth Street in a small very neat and clean 2 bedroom, up stairs apartment that they also shared with my grandfather Charles "Chick" BOSTIAN who was Mary Ellen's brother .
Mary Ellen worked as a Food Service Worker at the Selinsgrove Center PA for the Mental Challenged. She got my dad his job there working in food service.
Often her fellow work mates would give her gifts of big boxes of Chocolates in December.
She would give them to us children. She also gave us nice gifts other times of the year .
One year she bought my cousin Debbie and I a matching set of home made Barbie doll clothes from the Sunbury Market house on Main Street.
She loved us children, and along with her mother who she was a constant companion of,
she helped to raise several of her nieces and nephews who mothers had died young.
Her brother Harold "Bucky" lived a house away,
he was paralized from the waist down since a car accident in 1951,
Mary Ellen helped to care for him.
She was well loved by all.
Mary Ellen died September 22, 1969 of a brain Tumor in Northumberland CO Sunbury PA.
I would love to find her Obituary in the Sunbury Daily Item.

He was born on Saturday July 7, 1955 and deliverd by Dr. Solomon in Sunbury PA.

Sunbury Daily Item May 9, 1960
Sunbury Boy 4 Meets Death in Street Mishap.
Richard J. Bostian Jr., four son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Bostian 1130 East Chestnut Street, died Saturday afternoon of a fractured skull sustained when he was struck
by a station wagon on East Market Street.
The child was dead on arrival at Community Hospital at 12:45 o'clock.
Dr. Henry F. Ulrich, Sunbury, coroner of Northumberland county said the boy suffered an intracraniel hemorrhage and other injuries.
The coroner said there will be no inquest and that he was satisfied that death was the result of an unavoidable accident.
City police said that no charges have been lodged against,
the driver of the vehicle Robert H. Wolfington of New Buffalo.
Sgt. Marion Sprinkle, who investigated the accident, said that Wolfington was traveling east on Market street when the Bostian child suddenly dashed in front of his vehicle.
Wolfington said he saw the child but not in time to avoid striking him.
The accident occurred approximately 78 feet from the intersection
of N. Twelfth and Market Streets.
Sgt. Sprinkle said that tired marks on the street,
indicated that Wolfington skidded for a distance of 45 feet before his vehicle struck the child. The front bumper of the vehicle struck the boys left leg and the impact threw the child in the air. The station wagon continued forward for about 40 feet and the victim rolled some distance to the intersection.
Sgt. Sprinkle said the Bostian child attempted to cross from the south to the north side of the street where a playmate had gone.
H. H. Heintzelman. of Hamilton told police he was operating a truck a short distance in front of Wolfington and that when he heard the station wagon skid he looked back and saw the child being struck.
Mrs. James Shriver, 1114 East Market Street, opposite whose home the point impact occurred, said she heard the sound of skidding tires and ran out on her porch.
The women said she did not see the accident but saw the child lying in the street.
An Americas Ambulance took the victim to the hospital where the coroner released the body to the Dornsife funeral home. Sgt. Sprinkle said that young Bostian was playing with an Aurand boy who had crossed Market Street and was preparing to return to the south side when the victim ran out from along side a hedge into the street.
The child's distraught mother was placed under the care of a physician as a result of the tragedy. Richard Bostain Jr. was born in Sunbury July 9, 1955 a son of Richard Joseph and Shirly Mae Shultz Bostian. His age was four years.
